Tim Brown: Typography & Web Design

Moment of clarity

A wise man once told me I would suffer five years of work-world hustle before my design prowess returned to its collegiate state of coherence.

He was right.

The yield of my experience and education brings me focus and confidence. Moments of clarity have begun to seep into thoughtful spaces that only a year or two ago were overstuffed, filled to the brim with ambitious private and professional plans.

So maybe it is unfortunate that, lately, increasingly less of my time has been spent designing. At least it feels that way. I’m at more meetings. I’m reading more email. I’m thinking, sketching, and describing ideas rather than making things.

I had chalked the situation up to craving intelligence or being exhausted, but I now think it has more to do with my own impatience.

Craft will come. Right now, honest-to-God design is the endgame of several large efforts, and, luckily, a guide for logistical decisions throughout.

In a starry parking lot tonight, I saw clearly.

One day, and that day may not be soon, the thoughtful, imperfect projects I shoulder from dawn until dreary rest are going to fall to earth with a satisfying thump. Maybe even a graceful thump. Their designs will be beautiful, meaningful, rooted in reason.

Folks will wonder how I accomplished such impressive feats.

Friends will know how close I came to giving up.

I will be home, sleeping.
